    William Faden (1749-1836) was an important English cartographer and map-publisher of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, noted for the accuracy of his maps.  He was appointed Geographer to George III in 1783.

    De Sales (1741-1816) was a minor French philosopher whose speculations included the age of the earth and of the human race, who was imprisoned for his supposed anti-royalist views.  All of the maps produced for his works are scarce.

    Double hemisphere by Rumold Mercator, image 150 x 240 mm., platemark about 164 x 242 mm., sheet 194 x 253 mm.  Cologne, 1597.  This map is a smaller version of Rumold Mercator’s 1587 double hemisphere.  It was engraved by Girolamo Porro, with a much abbreviated text beneath the image.  Strapwork background, north pole depicted as sea, south as an extensive continent.  Upper margin worn just to platemark and reinforced with a strip of contemporary paper; otherwise very good and a strong impression.  Shirley* 202.

    Rumold Mercator (1545 – 1599), the son of Gerardus Mercator, assisted his father and produced maps of his own construction late in the sixteenth century.  Porro engraved on wood, copper and brass, and executed the illustrations, amongst others, for the 1584 edition of the Orlando Furioso.
