John Thomson was an important Scottish cartographer, whose main productions were the New General Atlas and the Atlas of Scotland (1820 – 1832). His maps sacrificed elaborate decoration in the cause of accuracy and detail; so much so, that his expenditure on preparing the Atlas of Scotland led to his bankruptcy.
