Turquie d'Asie, Arabie, Perse, Tartarie Independante.  Copper engraving with hand-colouring engraved by E. Dussy for the first edition of Didier Robert de Vaugondy's Nouvel Atlas Portatif, 1762.  Engraved area 240 x 218 mm., sheet 280 x 390 mm.  Central vertical fold as issued.  The cartouche designed and engraved by J. Arrivet.  The first state of this map.  Tiny barely perceptible repair to centre of map.

The Vaugondy family - Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) and his son Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786) - published maps and globes in Paris between 1731 and 1778, and are considered the most important French mapmakers of the eighteenth century.  Their most important series of maps were for the folio Atlas Universel, published from 1757 onwards.  The Nouvel Atlas Portatif appeared shortly after Didier had been appointed geographer to Louis XV.
