  • Wallace, Alfred Russel: Miracles and Modern Spiritualism

Wallace, Alfred Russel: Miracles and Modern Spiritualism

    BS 1033BS

On Miracles and Modern Spiritualism.  Three Essays by Alfred Russel Wallace.  London: James Burns, 1875.  First edition.  Original blue publisher’s cloth over bevelled boards, stamped in gilt, black and blind, all edges gilt.  Black endpapers with bookplate of Annie Yorke.  8º, pp. viii, 236, final blank, 2-page publisher’s catalogue.  A very good to fine copy.

Wallace (1823-1913), an explorer and naturalist, is famous for proposing a theory of evolution due to natural selection before Darwin published his own theory on the subject.  This work, which earned him some criticism and ridicule, is his contribution to the extensive Victorian literature on the subject.  The first edition is scarce, and rarely found in good condition.
