[Bidpar]: The Fables of Pilpay
Stock No. 1142BS
The Fables of Pilpay. Revised edition. With illustrations. London, Frederick Warne & Co. No date but c. 1886. 8º (206 x 150 mm.), pp. 274. Fine vignetted wood engraved head-pieces throughout, also small decorative tail-pieces. Publisher's deluxe binding of quarter tan calf over cloth boards, spine and upper board gilt, top edges gilt. Black endpapers. A few minor scuffs to spine, otherwise about fine, internally perfectly clean and fresh.
These largely animal fables have their origins in the Panchatantra, first set down in Sanskrit a couple of centuries before the birth of Christ, and in modern times usually appearing under the title of The Fables of Bidpar. The wood engravings are of very fine quality, and seem to be the work of the self-taught Scottish-American engraver Alexander Anderson (1775-1870).
