Lavoisne, C.V.: Complete Genealogical, Historical, Chronological, and Geographical Atlas
... Being a General Guide to History, both Ancient and Modern.. etc. Third edition, folio (434 x 283 mm.), J. Barfield (publisher and printer), London, 1827. Unpaginated, 64 double-page hand-coloured maps (giving a total of 43 historical & 26 geographical maps), rebacked and recornered in tan Chieftan leather, raised bands, morocco lettering-piece, inner hinges reinforced with cloth, retaining original marbled boards and morocco label on upper cover, and stationer's label on front pastedown. Apart from some very occasional speckling (see illustrations), a very clean and fresh example of the best edition with all the geographical maps, sensitively restored.
The graphic depiction of chronology exemplified by the historical "maps" in this atlas was popularised by Le Sage in his Atlas of 1801, though the idea seems to have arisen in the eighteenth century. Lavoisne's Atlas of 1827 was the most comprehensive English atlas of this type. Complete copies in good condition are scarce.
