Gilling (publisher): A New General Atlas of the World

Short Description

Stock No. 1031 BC

A New General Atlas of the World, With the Latest Discoveries and New Continental Alterations.  London.  W. Gilling, Suffolk Street.  Undated but c. 1820.  Title-page, list of maps, 38 unnumbered plates being an unlisted double-page double hemisphere (on a stub) followed by thirty-seven leaves of single-page maps as per the list.  408 x 320 mm., on heavy wove.  Original half roan, covers recovered in modern cloth, retaining original decorative leather label, ("A New General Atlas 4l. 4s. 0."), new plain endpapers, inner hinges reinforced with cloth, corners repaired.  Internally wear to edge of map list leaf, otherwise fine, the maps (which are fully wash-coloured) all exceptionally clean and bright.

A scarce atlas, and rarely seen with the maps in such good condition.  Two copies only listed on copac.  A selection of these maps appears a few years later in a similar production published by Ellis, 5 Smith's Square, Westminster, which is equally scarce.
