    Stock No. 3216MS

Copper-engraved map engraved by J. & G. Menzies, dated 1815, for the first edition of  John Thomson’s New General Atlas (1814 -1818).  Image 510 x 625 mm., sheet 540 x 730 mm.  Original outline and wash hand-colouring.  Central vertical fold as issued.  Old ms. number top left corner.   Short split (14 mm.) at foot of central vertical fold not touching engraved area.  A clean, fine example.

John Thomson was an important Scottish cartographer, whose main productions were the New General Atlas and the Atlas of Scotland (1820 – 1832).  His maps sacrificed elaborate decoration in the cause of accuracy and detail;  so much so, that his expenditure on preparing the Atlas of Scotland led to his bankruptcy.
